The Science of Medical Massage and Why It Belongs in Your Practice
In this talk, Dr. Narda Robinson describes the scientific basis of medical massage and reasons why it belongs in your practiced. In contrast to other forms of massage, medical massage focuses on problems related to a patient’s diagnosis and implements techniques to achieve specific outcomes. It complements conventional medical care by reducing stress, pain, and discomfort as well as facilitating the healing process through neuromodulation, myofascial relaxation, and improved circulation. Techniques draw from a variety of professions and philosophies, including osteopathic manual therapy. Clinical applications discussed in this talk include approaches for post-surgical recovery (especially for orthopedic cases), critical care medicine, neurologic injury, geriatric care, palliative medicine, and more.

Laurie McCauley

Dr. McCauley has had a lifelong passion to help as many pets as possible live an Optimum Quality of Life. After graduating from Colorado State School of Veterinary Medicine, she spent six years in general practice and quickly became a pioneer in the field of Veterinary Rehabilitation. She went on to open the first Veterinary Rehabilitation Clinic in 1998 and designed the first underwater treadmill for dogs.
Dr. McCauley was on faculty at Canine Rehabilitation Institute for 14 years and has taught thousands of veterinarians, and other rehabilitation professionals the art of Canine Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. She is certified in Acupuncture and Chiropractic therapy and Board Certified by the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Laurie is an international lecturer and contributing author in many textbooks and
journals. She was awarded the 2011 Iams AARV Award of Excellence in the Field of
Rehabilitation and the 2015 AHVMA Holistic Practitioner of the Year Award. She regularly steps in as the head of the Integrative Medicine department at the Louisiana School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. McCauley owns Red Tail Rehab, a mobile canine rehabilitation practice and Optimum Pet Vitality, a teaching platform for veterinary professionals and pet parents, helping pets achieve Optimum Health.

Stephen Niño Cital is a multi-credentialed veterinary technician specialist with a passion for anesthesia, pain management, and cannabinoid medicine. Cital has been on the forefront of cannabinoid medicine and the evolution of pain management in veterinary medicine. He has authored multiple articles and contributed to several textbooks, including acting as the lead editor for the first cannabinoid medicine textbook, titled “Cannabis Therapy in Veterinary Medicine”, by Springer Nature. He serves on multiple boards and is a strong advocate for veterinary technician advancement, along with minority representation. He is a lab manager at Stanford University in the department of neurobiology in addition to a clinical pain practitioner and partner at Remedy Veterinary Specialists. Narda Robinson
DO, DVM, MS, CRPM, FAAMA
Narda G. Robinson, DO, DVM, MS, CRPM, FAAMA is a leading authority on scientific integrative medicine from a One Health perspective, with decades of experience practicing, teaching, and researching integrative medical approaches in both veterinary and human osteopathic medicine. In 1998, Dr. Robinson launched Colorado State University’s first integrative medicine service and for eight years directed CSU’s Center for Comparative and Integrative Pain Medicine. Dr. Robinson continues to teach a variety of scientifically based programs, including anatomy, medical acupuncture, photomedicine, integrative rehabilitation, botanical medicine, and massage. Dr. Robinson holds a Bachelor of Arts (AB) degree from Harvard/ Radcliffe, a doctorate in osteopathic medicine (DO) from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, and a doctorate in veterinary medicine (DVM) and master’s degree in biomedical sciences (MS) from the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She is a fellow within the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (AAMA) and serves on the American Board of Medical Acupuncture, the board-certifying organization for physician medical acupuncturists.
