This session will be a review of the most common causes of a “red eye” in dogs and cats, in addition to a brief treatment overview. Learn to recognize signs of conjunctival inflammation and how to sort through the many underlying causes. Understand how cats differ from dogs in causes of conjunctivitis. Learn how to use diagnostic tests to help focus your differentials.

This lecture will describe techniques for examination of the retina and optic nerve with a goal of differentiating pathologic changes from normal variations. A brief overview of species-specific variation in retinal and optic nerve anatomy will also be provided.

Georgina Newbold
DVM, DACVO
Georgina Newbold has been a clinical faculty member at the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine since 2018. She earned her DVM degree from the University of California, Davis, and completed her comparative ophthalmology residency training at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In addition to teaching veterinary students in the classroom and on the clinic floor, she is also training the next generation of veterinary ophthalmologists. Dr. Newbold’s areas of interest are cataracts and surgery of the lens, corneal disease, and feline ophthalmology.

Katie Diehl
MS, DVM, DACVO
After undergrad at Cornell University, Dr. Diehl earned her masters and veterinary degrees at The Ohio State University, then completed a small animal rotating internship at the University of Georgia. She went on to complete a residency in comparative ophthalmology and cellular biology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin. Subsequently she worked in academia at the University of Minnesota and Auburn University as well as in private specialty practice. She is currently an associate professor of comparative ophthalmology and pursuing a PhD in canine genetics at the University of Georgia. She also serves on the ACVO genetics committee and tries to stay active with just about any outdoor pursuit, especially ones involving her Australian shepherds.

Anne Metzler
DVM, MS, DACVO
Professor Anne Gemensky Metzler is a 1995 graduate of The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). She joined the OSU Veterinary Clinical Sciences faculty after completing her residency training, M.S. degree and board certification at the OSU CVM in 2000. Dr. Metzler served as the President of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists and member of the Board of Regents from 2018-2023. She also served as Chair of the ACVO Examination Committee and served 3 years on the ACVO Credentials Committee. Dr. Metzler has been Head of the Comparative Ophthalmology Service since 2007 and serves as a member of the CVM Promotion and Tenure Committee. She participated in the Big Ten Academic Alliance Academic Leadership Program and The OSU President and Provost’s Leadership Institute. She enjoys teaching in all four years of the DVM curriculum as well as graduate and residency training. She was the recipient of the Class of 2020 Excellence in Teaching Award and recognized on the 2022-2023 and 2020-2021 OSU CVM Teaching Honor Roll. Dr. Metzler’s clinical and research interests include equine ophthalmology, treatment of equine glaucoma, infectious corneal disease in dogs and horses and cataract surgery. In addition to eyeballs, she enjoys marathons and ultrarunning, cooking and gardening.
