Pain Management for Chronic Disease
Chronic pain can be very difficult to control because the chronicity itself causes changes in the pain pathway that may not resolve with the use of common analgesics. Thus, effective treatment of chronic pain often requires administration of both traditional and ‘nontraditional’ analgesics along with nonpharmacologic techniques. The importance of the animal’s ‘team’ (caregiver or owner, technician, veterinarian, etc.) in pain identification/management will be stressed.

Analgesia in Small Mammals: Case Studies for Pain Management
As prey species, most small mammals are adept at hiding signs of illness or pain until late in the disease process. Additionally, they commonly present for surgery or procedures that necessitate analgesia. Therefore, identifying a painful small mammal is important in the management of many diseases. In this virtual lecture, we will discuss updates on analgesia in small mammals focusing on medication selection and practical application. As analgesia is commonly included in procedures, this lecture will also cover aspects of small mammal anesthesia or sedation.
