Oral Assessment On The Dental Patient Under Anesthesia
Preparation is the next step to ensure the team member is protected from potential nosocomial infection and the patient is stabilized, maintained, and positioned correctly. The oral exam under anesthesia entails a tooth-by-tooth evaluation. The team member must be familiar with the oral cavity structures to perform the oral exam successfully. The use of diagnostic instruments such as the periodontal probe to find periodontal pockets, gingival bleeding, and furcation involvement, along with the dental explorer to find pulp exposure and tooth resorption, will be covered. Lastly, a basic dental charting technique will show how the examination findings combined with dental radiographs are recorded on a dental chart that guides the clinician.

Jeanne began her career as a veterinary nurse in general practice with an interest in Dentistry. In 2000, she was asked to chair the organizing committee for the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians (AVDT) where she was able to hone her leadership skills and further the vision of improving the oral health of our pets through the education of veterinary staff members and pet owners.
In 2005, Jeanne began presenting at veterinary conferences and teaching in-clinic and online training of Dentistry skills. She also edited her first veterinary Dentistry textbook in 2013 with a second edition published in 2021.
Jeanne graduated with a Masters in Instructional Design and Technology in August 2019. Her focus is on improved learning outcomes using case-based scenarios. She is currently developing e-learning courses in veterinary Dentistry—specifically dental radiology, instrumentation, client education, performing an oral exam, and recognizing oral pathology.
To date, Jeanne has delivered more than 100 presentations, authored almost 20 publications and developed 4 courses in a variety of settings including virtual and e-Learning environments.
Mary L. Berg

Mary received her B.S. in Biology/Microbiology from South Dakota State University, her A.S. in Laboratory Animal Science from Redlands Community College, and her A.S. in Veterinary Technology from St. Petersburg College.
She is a Charter member of the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians and received her Veterinary Technician Specialty in Dentistry in June 2006. Mary is currently serving as the treasurer of the AVDT and has memberships to the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, and the American Veterinary Dental Society.
Mary worked in research for over 13 years, specializing in products aimed at improving oral health of companion animals. She served as the practice manager and dental specialist at Gentle Care Animal Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas for over seven years and is the President of Beyond the Crown Veterinary Education, a veterinary dental consulting service.
She has authored or co-authored over 60 publications including publications in the Journal of Dental Research, the Veterinary Technician Journal and the NAVTA journal and has been a speaker and wet lab instructor at numerous conferences to include Western Veterinary Conference, North American Veterinary Conference, Annual Veterinary Forum, American Veterinary Medical Association Conference, AAHA conference and multiple state conferences.

Dr. Bellows is one of six board certified companion animal specialists (canine and feline) in Broward County, Florida as well as one of 190 Board Certified Veterinary Dentists™ in the United States.
He practiced in Pembroke Pines, Florida for over twenty years before opening Hometown Animal Hospital and Dental Clinic in February 2000. Hometown Animal Hospital and Dental Clinic is an American Animal Hospital Association Certified Specialty Facility as well as an American Animal Hospital Certified Hospital. There are only two such certified animal hospitals in Broward County.
Dr. Bellows grew up in New York, attended the University of Florida for undergraduate training and Auburn University for his veterinary degree. He completed a medicine and surgery internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City.
Doctor Bellows has received numerous awards in his career including the Florida Veterinary Medical Association Gold Star Award in 2012.
